Karen Jonas’s fifth album is described as a “flashback fuelled fever dream” which makes it sound more eclectic than it actually is.
The Virginia singer-songwriter’s take on Americana is not really so radical or wild but is strongly rooted in traditional country and western sound.
The ten songs were written while travelling around desert California in a converted Greyhound bus and between tour stops in West Texas. They were recorded in her home studio with producer EP Jackson. Her four-piece band add conventional but polished textures.

Jonas’ sweet yet sassy vocals drive the humour and energy of tunes like The Last Cowboy (at the Bowling Alley) , Pink Leather Boots and Be Sweet To Me. She also does mellow and moody quite effectively on Maybe You’d Hear Me Then and Barely Breathing.
In short, you’re looking at country.
