This 4-track EP opens with a version of Don Henley’s The Boys of Summer; one of those feel good songs that is practically impossible to mess up. Karen Jonas doesn’t miss this open goal and relays the forward looking optimism efficiently. The other three tunes are originals and maintain the seasonal theme set by the opener.
Jonas is known primarily as a country singer although with strong elements of pop and the blues, she doesn’t fit squarely into any genre.
In the languid Summer’s Hard For Love she seems disinclined to expend too much effort of a troubled relationship.
The more dynamic Thunder on the Battery is engendered with a muddy guitar sound while the lovelorn Summer Moon is a simple acoustic song recorded in one take.
The songs won’t necessarily get you rushing to the beach but they are nevertheless a welcome antidote to the wintery blues.
