Our Rating:
Your reviewer's always a little uneasy when confronted with a record like BEYER AND LINK's double A-side "Heartbreak"/ "Ananda". Not because it's bad - it's actually professionally-executed - but because such obvious club constructions were never designed to be consumed in the cold light of a late summer afternoon in your living room with the only available stimulants being copious cups of tea.

And these two tracks do veer too close to faceless dance music to really succeed in such clinical conditions. Both are OK: insistent, understated and menacing, with the rhythms nailed down with spikes and momentary sonic interest driting in and out of focus to keep the proletariat happy.

"Heartbreak" is probably the more 'accessible', though that's a term to be employed loosely, and Tiga's mumbled, obscene phone call vocal bits certainly owe a debt to Cabaret Voltaire. "Ananda", though, is arguably the better, succumbing to a nighmarish quality and a distinct Motorik thrum as it wends its' ominous way to the finish line.

It's by no means a bad record of its' type, but only one to be celebrated in the correct, controlled circumstances and doesn't break any fresh ground otherwise.
