Review: 'YELLOWCARD'
'OCEAN AVENUE'

-  Label: 'CAPITOL'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '6th September 2004'

Our Rating:
"Ocean Avenue" is the first single taken from Yellowcard's new album of the same name, and is an easy digestible slice pop-punk or more accurately a 3-minute blast of skate rock.

Yellowcard are Ryan Key, 23 (vocals, guitars); Sean Mackin, 24 (violin, vocals); Benjamin Harper, 22 (guitar); Longineu Parsons III, 23 (drums); and Pete Mosely, 24 (bass, vocals) and are signed to the big boys Capital Records.

Yellowcard are a modern pop punk band with a difference. They have a classically-trained violinist amongst their ranks in the form of Sean Mackin. Clever new angle or hopeless commercial gimmick? only time (and patience) will tell. Yellowcard boast to be playing 200 nights a year, after a successful spell in the States with their album turning Platinum. The boys are currently touring the UK in support of New Found Glory.

The single starts as you’d expect. You can hear the cheesy high kicks as the youthful adrenaline merges with the big, hooky upbeat teenage angst. The chorus kicks in,“if i could find you now things would get better, we could leave this town and run forever” sings frontman Ryan. So far so generic, but not entirely unpleasant.

Unfortunately this sub genre is solely aimed at the temporary download generation fan base, this music should carry a warning “not to be taken seriously over the age of 18." Yellowcard may find it hard to find a wider audience on this evidence and their obvious schtick never reaches the heights of catchy bubble-gum pop, which is in itself a cautionable offence.
