Our Rating:
This is the latest Jesus Blood colored vinyl compilation, of music made by people who were part of the Jesus people movement in the 1960's and 70's, the folks that tuned in, got turned on, and dropped out to read the bible, the freakiest hippies around, they are all patchouli oil and rosaries. All but one of the acts on this album are from the USA, except Candida Pax who come from the hippy idyll of Carnforth in Lancashire that was apparently once the home for Jesus people communes.

The a-side opens with Hello Friends by Our Generation who recorded this in New York in 1972. Droning space rock, sepulchral piano, freak out psyche rock with choral vocals, encouraging us all to meditate together, as we commune, the musical freak out gets wilder yet.

All Across The Nation by All Saved Freak Band from a commune near Orwell in Ohio, recorded in 1980 and featuring Greg Schwartz from The James Gang. It opens with a wailing Hendrix style freak out over a Sly & The Family stone style funky strut, as the testifying call to Jesus and the church, tells us all to read the book of revelations.

The Bible by D.R. Hooker from New Haven Connecticut was recorded in 1972, as he implores you to read your scripture, over frazzled psyche freak beat organ, distorted guitars, listening to the word of Jesus your savior, stopping feedback before your very ears.

Darkness by Candida Pax has a sort of English Jesus Army edge to proceedings, all desert blues bass rumbling, allowing the picked guitar to illustrate the very Van Morrison style divine tale, that’s being emoted into the dark corners of your soul in time for a speedy freakout, as if they are od'ing on barm Cakes filled with hash black puddings.

The B-side opens with Joy Comes In The Morning by Patric Calfe who recorded this in the musical hotbed of Akron Ohio in 1974, this maracas led, Syd Barrettesque plaintive morning prayer for a new day, with odd woodblock percussion, this is not about morning wood, as you shake out the ghosts, getting ready for a brand new day full of redemption of the sort that comes through a spry guitar solo.

New Jerusalem by The Last Call Of Shiloh who travelled from Sandpoint in Idaho to record this in Spokane Washington in 1972, this is based on The book of Revelations Chapter 21, recanted over slow gospel folk blues, gently evoking gods hand of love among the gospel tinged backing vocals.

Homecoming by Sonfolk from St Paul Minnesota was recorded in 1973, opens as late-night gentle folk ministrations to bring the lord home with you, make sure to read your bible every day, to allow the deeply weird Oh Sweet Nothing inspired middle eight permeate your brain, like a pre-Spiritualized influencer searching for god rather than his mainline.

The album closes with Lord, Come Into My Life by First Revelation who recorded this in New York in 1973 it opens with a Tornadoes style organ break, before Lynda Kimer's gospel soul imprecations to let the lord into your life stuns me into awe at this gospel soul freak out, a magnificent rousing conclusion to this album, as the stunningly out of place guitar solo from Danny Kimer helps you to let Jesus into your life, so you too can be redeemed by the power of Jesus people music.
