Review: 'WAUTERS, JUAN'
'Wandering Rebel'

-  Label: 'Captured Tracks'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '2nd June 2023'

Our Rating:
‘Wandering Rebel’ is the sixth solo album from this songwriter from Uruguay.

Like so many artists, the lack of touring in the years due to the pandemic forced a musical and psychological re-think.

Given the enforced layoff, the album’s title is intentionally ironic. “During COVID I discovered that I like stability, but the world still sees me as a wandering rebel” he Wauters sings/speaks/explains on the title track.

He put down roots in Montevideo, Uruguay after sojourns in New York. He sings in English and Spanish with the help of vocal contributions from Kline, Luz Elena Mendoza (Y La Bamba), Zoe Gotusso, and Super Willy K.

The album has songs about romantic commitment (Amor, Amor), mental health (Nube Negra) and touring (Let Loose. Modus Operandi features Greta Kline (Frankie Cosmos) and is gently critical of New Yorkers who left the city at the onset of the lockdown.

Any bitterness or anger is muted or downplayed, however, so the record has a warm, laid back and life-affirming feel.
