Review: 'Special Pillow, The'
'The Special Pillow Meets The Space Monster'

-  Label: 'Zofko Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '16.2.24.'

Our Rating:
The Special Pillow Meets the Space Monster and gets all fluffed up and stuffed with outer space down, feather light as New Jersey's laid-back purveyors of sophisticated pop are back, with a slight sci-fi twist this time round. As usual they have recorded the ep at Deep Dive Studio's in Brooklyn with Mitch Rackin in the engineer's chair. The Special Pillow is made up of Dan Cuddy, Katie Gentile, Peter Stuart and Eric Marc Cohen with Debbie Schwartz. With additional horns from Steven Levi and Cheryl Kingan.

The ep opens with Three On A Sundial that hove's into view through the cloudy skies as they make sure we all sing that chorus with them, this is fluffy indie with a chamber pop edge, it's quite different to the bands previous releases.

A Certain Level Of Uncertainty feels like an updated Silos song, as the anxiety of modern times is delved into with the violin replacing the lead guitar almost totally. The main instrumental freak out has shades of John Cale's viola rave ups with the Velvets.

Fond And Foggy adds a horn section to the mix to add textures to the foggy feelings of not quite remembering how you got to be as in love as you are, but you'll be very happy to dedicate this to the one you love, as you seek to move things on, learning from the past.

Give Up The Ghost has shimmering violin helping to encapsulate what you need to do, to win the battle against the Ghosts that have be gnawing away at you, the utterly beautiful tune will make you feel rather relaxed as you finally free yourself of that Ghost.

That's The Way It's Got To Be is a cover of a tune from Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster originally by The Poets, this string heavy version gives this a cool twist or two as this feels like a love song for that monster.

The ep closes with Nowhere to Go But Home that has a downbeat feel as they have reached that point in time where they have nothing else left to do but go home once more, but the vocals sound like home is the last place they really want to go, as the strings encapsulate the feelings of longings for more adventure.
