Review: 'TORAL, RAFAEL'
'Spectral Evolution'

-  Label: 'Moikai'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '23rd February 2024'

Our Rating:
This album comprises twelve individually named sections but these are weaved into a single piece of sprawling yet immersive instrumental music lasting just over 47 minutes.

It can be found on Jim O’Rourke’s Moika imprint distributed by Drag City, a label that previously released the experimental Portuguese artist’s work on ‘Sound Mind Sound Body’ and ‘Wave Field’.

Although originally trained as a jazz guitarist, Toral has expanded his sonic options through custom-made electronic instruments. The sound is built around long tones and stasis but also includes varied vibrations.

Toral explains his work process: “Experimenting with feeding a modulated guitar tone into an overtone generator, I found this cascade of multiple interference patterns that occur in the high range, sometimes sounding a bit like a church organ.” Jazz harmonies also find their way into the mix.

While technically sophisticated, the soothing simplicity of the textures create soulful, mind-expanding music.
