Our Rating:
Perspicacity is the latest of over 90 solo albums Joel Futterman has released since his debut Solo album Cafeteria came out in 1980, he has been playing and performing as a pianist for even longer.

The album opens with Part 1 a long piano led improvisation, that has some rather dense intense passages among the flights of keyboard fancy, drawing the listener into this world of ever-expanding improvisation. A slow fluttering ascent towards the florid conclusion of Part 1.

The opening of Part 2 feels almost like a prepared piano piece weaving together ideas from Dixieland with musique concrete, distorting the overarching principles of both too arrive at a new way of expressing the sentiments within the sound, ululations of cadence leaving supreme peace in view, as the solipsistic wanderings caress your ears.

Gentility flaking away as Part 3 opens to awaken thoughts and impressions, florid runs descend into bass rolls of darkness, leading into rising swirls delighting in intricate softness, spilling notes among the rising feelings. Slowly evolving into chilled spaces dappled with a fine rain pattering all around.

Joel seems to be trying to sound like he's playing a Virginal at the opening of Part 4 that soon slips back into florid piano runs as it sounds like his hands are flying all over the place. Spaces open up to be filled with indentations of melody, flights of scales, scores of counter intuitive notes.

The album comes to its conclusion with Part 5 slow bass notes held as long as possible, as cascades of lighter sounds splayed across the speakers, as Joel goes walking across the keyboard meandering rambling seeking a way out, a possible answer to the questions asked in the first 4 parts. Has this classical roots or is it pure free jazz and improv.
