Our Rating:
Anton Barbeau is back not with one album, but with two I am reviewing Glitch Wizard first and Dig The Light second, Glitch Wizard was recorded at Dark Mystery Temple or the basement of his parents' home, while Anton was caring for his dad in his final days on earth. He recorded the album with help from Dave Gregory, Andy Metcalfe and Donald Ross Skinner.
The album opens with the title track Glitch Wizard that is surprisingly unglitchy, sounding like a classic Anton wonky pop song, telling us all about what the Glitch Wizard gets up too, it breaks down into a quiet cymbal heavy section before the guitars come back in and Anton keeps on celebrating the heart of the glitch Wizards mind.
Nightcrawler has a funky guitar that Anton sings around, with his thoughts on why the Nightcrawler has lost his nerve, did his mojo desert him, are the babes no longer falling in his arms with almost no effort, how will he rekindle his fire.
Cousins may steal a few bits from the Beach Boys while discussing just how his cousins helped or hindered Anton in his hours of need, before his father passed on to another realm, it is both downbeat and surprisingly bright, while sorrows are drowned.
Cigarettes may be for sale or rent, we may also start pushing broom looking for that depression era room to rent, this is slow dark reflections, with deliberate acoustic guitar whirls, super slow drumming, how many final Cigarettes can his dad slowly puff his way through on his way to the end.
Feed The Machine don't drop any more coins in, you won't get the relief you seek, it may be time to let nature take its course, how can you lift that curse, well not easily as some things just can't be fixed.
Secret Sister is the sort of gal who whistles Candle In The Wind without it making you go postal on her, dark electric guitar rises to prominence, while he asks to be cleansed of all his sorrows by his Secret Sister, he hopes to learn valuable lessons along the way accompanied by a synth line that may help chisel away at the pain.
Sing High while you feel low, ask your dad if he feels he is getting better, while he's slipping off this mortal coil, Sing High and let those synths carry you off. Off The Hook is slow and thoughtful intro with a repeating mantra like sound, it slowly builds adding layers of spaced out spectral guitar, that gets closer and closer to actually going fully Off The Hook, while allowing the central character in the song to be absolved of anything he may have accused them of.
Soft Golden Halo shimmers over his dad's head, while he has dreams of playing in The Eagles and Abba like he is having the worst acid flashbacks possible, while asking for his dads love one last time. Almost Ohm is ready for you to light up the incense sit cross legged on the floor and chant along too, Namaste my brother.
All I Want Is A Little More Of Your Time is a familiar cry to anyone who watches a parent die a slow death, you never quite have enough time to say everything to them, this is easy to sing along to the chorus, remember the good and bad times you spent with your parents.
Me Coughing no doubt I've just inhaled to deeply again, this has a bucolic acid folk feel, Beach Boys clashing with the Incredible String Band full of reflections on the things your dad said to you in the final months.
The album closes with Pattern Forming that has a weird late 90's tribal dance music goes introspective indie feel to it, that is very engaging and also reminds me of some of the music on Anton's Manbird album, he keeps promising that sound will come again, here's hoping it does, before his machines slowly expire over the outro.
