Over a twenty-year career singer-songwriter Dan Hubbard from Illinois has made nine studio albums.
This tenth release is a modest six-track EP.
The ‘volume 1’ epithet suggests that it is a work in progress.
Hubbard visits various genres and the record opens with a big orchestrated production - Remember - with soulful shades of Al Green style power balladry.
Thereafter the tracks have more in common with R&B and introspective pop.
Communication is a theme but the lyrics have a sinister edge. “I just want someone to be sad with” he sings forlornly on Sad Eyes while Bind Up has the disturbing line “Your love is stronger than wine, strong as death.”
The Roy Orbison like Open Up is lighter and pop tones ultimately hold sway.
