Cold Fire is the latest Ep by Liverpudlian modern soul band The Wood who are Alex Evans, Steve Powell, Brooke Combe, Jake Woodward, Mike Smith, Rob Stringer, Charlie Griffiths, Clair Griffiths, Amy Chalmers, Matt Phillips and Rachel Nicholas. The EP was produced & recorded by Steve Powell at Ark Recording Studios, Liverpool and Mastered by Pete Maher.
The EP opens with Cold Fire featuring Brooke Combe whose rich gospel soul vocals evoke the feelings of pain and loss over a church organ and choral backing, slowly leading you towards the redemptive powers, Alex Evans vocal replies to Brooke's concerns, this has a slow burning intensity in the rising guitar part.
Romantic Attitude has more of a dancefloor attitude, allowing them to strut and preen on this cover of the John Fitch & Associates Northern Soul obscurity, while seeking peace and quiet to be left alone, no amount of pleading will get you into his heart, rarely has anyone asked so politely to be left alone in a song, before a soaring intense squalling guitar solo plays against the super steady beat, it appears he wants to play with his guitar more than he does with you.
Hold On is a slow strummed acoustic guitar led gospel blues for anyone who just needs to Hold On and keep on hoping for better times, the feel of a late-night gospel session helping to soothe your soul. The EP closes with the upbeat Wait For The Sun that has a far rockier blues sound, a bit like Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires they beg and plead for you to Wait For The Sun and your ultimate salvation.
