Review: 'Steve Lane'

Our Rating:
Where The Rivers Meet is the fifth album by Australian singer songwriter Steve Lane who recorded part of the album at Beetroot Studios in Scotland with Stuart MacLeod, with the rest recorded at Steve's own studio in Emu Creek Australia, the album was produced by Darren Seltmann and Mixed by Joe Carra.

The album opens with Song You Can't Write No More mainly because it's a psychedelically infested blues exploration of mind and body, going on the sort of quest that went out of fashion when smart phones took over, so put down that phone and immerse yourself in the detailed guitar solo.

Carousel whirls around and around extracting your dreams and memories of childhood books, ideals long since gone from your life, the gentle lilting guitars add poignancy while Steve searches for those hidden truths to be revealed.

Runaway Mule has reverb laden vocals that give this an Opalesque quality for this cool duet with Neneh Lane U'Ren for that most Outback of experiences of the Runaway Mule, who has stolen the show and has everyone transfixed.

Make The Trains Run On Time a perennial cry of the British and so it seems the Australians as well, co-written with John Douglas from Trashcan Sinatra's, this has cool intertwining guitars adding emphasis to the pleas for some German, Swedish or Chinese efficiency with the guitars shimmering away and a great modern train porn video.

No Small Miracle has gentle brushed drums, for this yearning song, seeking a little solace, a very laid-back violin accompaniment, seeking a little compassion, trying to make the world a happier place.

Last Drinks go on let me have one more drink before we leave, go on you know you want one more drink, it will heal you of that malady, you'll feel more alive, even if you can barely walk, staggering about to this drive time rocker, go on pour me another one, groove along with this song that isn't as desperately in need of more booze than Hot Lips Page was, when he sang Last Call For Alcohol all those years ago.

RESET a title that sums up our times succinctly, the parts of Steve's life that also need a RESET, emotions laid bare, he is so glad to have an angel looking after him, sweetly evocative and full of warmth and generosity.

Manifesto for finding a better way of living, urgent guitars, loving and feeling, listening to scholars and shut up and listen if I don't know the answers, tearing down the late capitalist malaise of greed is great, totally in tune with everyone starting to fight against the current oppressive climate, driving beats making clear Love is the answer along with romping guitar riffs.

Small Town Kings sound like they are dancing barefoot over everyone, making like everyone should pay heed to them and pay tribute, Steve wants to push past such petty gatekeeping, the old ways of toll booths need to end, oh no they have just changed the name to congestion charge or emissions taxes, but I digress, this is slowly angry at anyone living that Small Town life.

The Dying Age is here, right here, right now signalled by Steve gently flexing, bending his vocals to winter blues, in my case with friends and family dying almost daily the last couple of months, this certainly touches a nerve or two, when you know your entering generation death, making sure you say goodbye in time, enjoy one last melancholy guitar solo together before it's too late.

Rust Spoken spending time looking at the local landscape, watching the rust change and grow, becoming more intense and perfect for our next artwork, or turning into an Industrial instrument, although there are no clanging sounds on this widescreen indie rocker.

The album closes with She Waits for the downhearted cellos to play, the ebbs and flows of life, a lament from within a northern squall raging around her, slowly subtly changing, days roll by, waiting for you to be by her side, back from adventures at sea once more.
