Review: 'Nevaris'
'Sound Sessions EP'

-  Label: 'Nolej Records'
-  Genre: 'Reggae' -  Release Date: '27.2.26.'

Our Rating:
Sound Session was originally conceived as a live stream performance, but instead being released as a four track 35-minute-long ep by the 9-piece dub orchestra that is Nevaris lead by Agustin Nevaris who recorded at Producer Bill Laswell's Orange Sound Studios in West Orange New Jersey. It was recorded one take live, without overdubs, recorded and mixed by James Dellatacoma in the live room created for Frankie Valli originally. The other members of Nevaris are DJ Logic, Peter Apfelbaum, Jojo Kuo, Will Bernard, Lockatron, Angel Rodriguez, Jonathan Maron & Matt Dickey.

The album opens with a live version of Ninth Sun a deep dub, slightly scratchy meditation with exploratory guitar reaching out, to get the sax player to take it further. Scratchy sounds draw us deep into our journey out to the Ninth Sun.

Remedy strips the Rock & Roll from Alpha Blondy's classic leaving a cool stripped back Remedy and a totally new tune, that feels like this is dub for a flotation tank, the sax wanders around the steady beat, percussion that flows in several directions while guitar strings are bent and sound reshaped in healing waters.

Document has a scratchy opening and super slow serpentine groove, counter melodies develop in the brass adornments. Guitars and bass are telling a different story, weaving different aspects into this tune, while it mutates and curls around your brain.

The Ep closes with the 17 minute epic Dub Orchestra that allows the listener to light up a Phat one, kick back and wallow in the space they create and inhabit, sylph like guitars weaving around the bassline, mysterious sounds impinging, lifting the mood and adding to the scratched interventions, stretching further out to space, a gentle flute appears through the spaceways, heading them towards Philly flute funk Badlands, before being chilled right down to earth with bongo flourishes and tremulous guitar, eventually they emerge into the Pablo dimension like 21st century Augustinian monks.
