Our Rating:
DFII is the second album by Daemonik Fonce who a indie supergroup comprising Welsh twins Stewart & Paul Summers (Sharp Tongues, Ten Benson, Shrapnel), Hannah Egden (Tits Of Death), Sam Mansbridge (Rumblestrips) and Andy Prestidge (Warning, Osiris Club, Angel Witch). It was Recorded at West Sound Studios in Newport by Ricard Jackson and mastered by Keith Tenniswood at Curve Pusher.
The A-side of DFII opens with a current crucial message on Oh Corita that makes crystal clear we should fight war and live peacefully, he is begging American Nun and peace campaigner Corita Kent to be his woman, he pledges to make love not war and to fight war not make wars, over the shifting crunchy guitars, pushing the messages we need to be better than we currently are. This should be on repeat blaring out of every window currently.
Test Tube Grapelli appears to want to make a replicant race of Stephan Grapellis, ruling over us one violin solo at a time, or that's what the song title suggests to me, this might have a different message of how you stick it to the man while singing for your supper.
Speck is all, we all are, in the grand scheme of things, they ruminate on how that makes them feel, over glam stomp guitars and rhythm. On The Skids has a great repeating guitar figure for this rather glammy alternative rocker for claiming they would rather be all glammed up and rocking than down and out On The Skids, now everyone learn the backing vocal part and join in.
Solar man has a sludge jazz rock intro, coming of the Solar Man who is going to touch down and leave you living in a world run by Alex Harvey and other idols of the glam era, an alternate reality that is just the sort of escape most of us are currently seeking.
My Fathers Bananas for that magical day after world war 2 when the singers dad had the first banana in town, just how special that made him feel, this brings a tear to my eye, remembering my mums tales of just how happy she was to have her first banana after the war, she ended up eating a banana almost every day for the rest of her life.
The B-side opens with Chippin' Away an anthem for everyone who is just about getting away with it, be it stealing a tune almost wholesale, or living on bags of chips, this is super catchy glam rock.
The Human Leach sounds a bit Nightingales style slightly obtuse tune, taking aim at the creatures, we all recognise for being The Human Leach, ruining life for far too many of us. Night Terrors has them afraid there is a devil in there ceiling, these days they are lucky to only have Night Terrors, in the 2020's day terrors seem to be common place sadly, this is stripped back with part of the tune repurposed from the Human League while they try to stave off the insomnia with Valerian and Valium.
Provincial Bohemian we have all met a few of them over the years, he's pretty cool for a yokel, this tune is good and catchy and will make you want to go on a drinking marathon with him. The album closes with The Great Epiphany that hints it may be that psychedelic guitars are always best, so tune in, turn on and drop out to the mellow psychedelia, where nothing is quite what it seems The Great Epiphany we must all come to realise at some point either with or without any DF118's.
