Our Rating:
COUNTERMINE do pop music for people with other things on their mind. They're not bad as such. They could have been artists 30 years ago. But now they're entertainers with some good voices and pretty tunes. "Letters" has been done, been done to death. Been on MTV. Been the theme music behind the closing credits. Been to Hollywood and got the Grammy.

The hook is a three note descent on piano. That's sweet. It will make people file them next to Coldplay and Travis. But Travis and Coldplay will still get played more.

There are two more mixes on the single. Pick a track, any track. Can you guess what you've chosen? No. But it doesn’t matter. The choked emotional phrasing, the crescendo through a layered harmony and a big thumping drum track and rising piano … the quiet bit, the tension, the arpeggiated guitar. Mmm. I have no right to knock it. I couldn’t do it and there are plenty of people who still want to here this power ballad stuff just one more time. Give 'em the money.
