Review: 'ANIMAL PLANET'
'SPECIAL CARE'

-  Label: 'LAP RECORDS'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'JANUARY 2005'

Our Rating:
I’m such an arse sometimes.

ANIMAL PLANET’s ‘Special Care’ has been languishing chez Drums for a while now and finally when I get round to playing it I’m kicking myself for not discovering its brilliance sooner. Comprising of Jason on vocals and drums (Phil Collins? Wahey!), Tasha on vocals and bass-synth, Rob on guitar and vocals and Lucy on moog and vocals ANIMAL PLANET are splendidly fab and groovy.

From the same lovely people who brought us the infectious THE SECRET HAIRDRESSER ‘We Did It On Purpose’ EP – who also had this reviewer swooning in admiration – ‘Special Care’ is a shot of pure pop heaven. All the thrilling elements one hopes to find in 2’19” of addictive classic pop music are present and correct : Glitter Band drums, Fuzzbox guitar, “woo-hoo” backing vocals and lyrics about escaping the city that admirably declare “I’ve gotta take a long ride on my motorboat / Find a little place that nobody knows”. What more can you want apart from playing it over and over again?

Someone at the BBC should commission another series of ‘Cheggars Plays Pop’ just so that ANIMAL PLANET can perform ‘Special Care’ for all the musically undernourished kids in TV Land oblivious to its infinite charms. It’s too good for MTV.

After such a pulsating blast of wonderment I’m happy to indulge their whims in the throw-away moog-pop stomp of ‘This Dog’ and the breezy acoustic work in progress of ‘Pamela Anne’. But it’s ‘Special Care’ that your ears need.

Now, who out there has got Keith Chegwin’s phone number?
