Post-War is the latest solo album from The Audience legend Billy Reeves, mainly recorded in England and completed at Beetroot Studios in Lanarkshire Scotland, where most of The Bluebells added backing vocals. Many of the songs on the album are re-worked from demos, that were on a mini disc, that survived the near fatal car crash, that caused catastrophic memory loss when he finally emerged from a coma, his music career was paused for a few years until he had fully recovered.
The album opens with Encylopedi-ite a journey back to a teenage romance, being allowed into his girlfriend's room to discover the wonders within and all the things that happened, once he was allowed in your life, over the heavy indie guitars and stripped back drumming.
Funny Love is wry reflections asking is the laugh track actually laughter, while wondering if his girlfriend was actually famous or not, with some almost 80's sounding guitar lines helping the wonder and thoughts for how things are, the Bluebells backing vocals give this a real nostalgic feel.
Teetotal is for the days after the binges of youth are behind you, adult responsibility means you need to be on an even keel all the time, living up to your commitments, he no longer smiles for no reason, but this has a gently soulful indie feel with widescreen production.
Want In is what you want to do, make sure you have the right car and labels and want to make super catchy pop songs, that's how much you want to get your foot in the door, you'll even copy old Ben and don a beret if you have too.
The End Of Side One is a slow strummed reflections on the last things you see before you die, which considering the near fatal car crash Billy survived has added piquancy, to ideas of meeting his love in paradise after the event.
From Stopp's To Jackson's is far more atmospheric ambient sounds with higher keening vocals. A Little Longer is piano led hushed words and feelings making plain that he will wait for you until you are ready to spend time with him.
Christmas Is Cold has an oompah feel to this nice chilly Christmas song, that may end up being as insidious as some of Billy's previous Christmas singles, with the outro sounding like it should be on the end credits of a Christmas movie.
Tony Got A Car is sparse piano allowing Billy to fill in the details for what is happening all over the place, taking us to Spain and other locations, looking at how Adam Ant made a full recovery and they built the flats on Highbury, this has a cool scattergun approach while I try to work out what song it reminds me of, but slowed down enough for us to take a trip in Tony's car.
The album closes with The End Of Loneliness has Billy running around half naked and almost out of his mind at The End Of Loneliness with sparse hand drums and keyboards for reflections on how much life he has left in him.
