Our Rating:
Young singer/ songwriter NADIE was apparently attracted to being a bad girl very early on. She once attended a convent school and was forever up before the beak for being drunk in lessons and getting caught smoking. Fortunately, this rebellious streak ran parallel to a more creative aspect in her personality and she soon began writing songs: one of which allegedly dealt with an alien flying over a banana tree. Hmm. Makes you wonder what was really in the cigarettes she was caught smoking.

Anyway, since growing up, Nadie has continued along her songwriting path and it's finally led to her debut single "Like I Used To", where an older and wiser character spins a story of having her heart broken by an ex-boyfriend while going through the trauma of losing her Father. And to be fair, it's not half bad, actually. It's rocky and rather akin to a young Alanis Morrisette guesting with Ash, and with a nice line in woman-scorned lyrics to boot. It's not even remotely ground-breaking, but is competent, tuneful and will sound good on the radio.

Staying tuned for the B-side "I Break Twice" turns out to be a wise move, too, as this one is a slow, smouldering semi-acoustic affair with a yearning to move in Coldplay/ Oasis-style circles. It's well-crafted, surprisingly elegant and finds strings flitting in and out without ever getting too ostentatious.

So yeah, while Nadie is more linear and commercially-minded than most of the things that usually float my boat, she's certainly one to watch. Besides, she certainly demonstrates that not all would-be bad girls end up as time-wasting twerps like Charlotte Church, and that's more than enough to secure my vote.
