Well, this is a nice surprise. The last time your reviewer came across Alex Macpherson, he was bassist in ace cult Glaswegians The Wake during the 1980s: one of the few non-Manchester stalwarts to record for Tony Wilson's Factory label and - lest we forget - the band that Bobby Gillespie left to join the fledgling Jesus & Mary Chain.
Indeed, it was Macpherson who stepped adroitly into Gillespie's shoes for a while, but since those days your reviewer has heard little from him, so to find him re-emerging with an intriguing new single so long after the fact is pretty damn heartening.
Featuring Katrina Docherty's pretty, but commanding vocal talents, "One Last Kiss" actually sounds a little like a modernised, dancefloor-intended take on the Wake's 80s sound, but without ever sounding desperate or forced. It's got the glacial keyboards down just right, benefits further from Mac's Jah Wobble-style bass burrowing and busy rhythms (especially in its' radio-friendly 'Last Days Of Disco' mix) and is starry-eyed, romantic and lovelorn in just about the right proportions. Indeed, if there's still any justice, it could even cause a minor chart skirmish given the breaks, but that's probably another story.

Anyway, regardless of its' commercial fortunes, "One Last Kiss" is a good single worth seeking out. Simple as that. Great to have you back in the fold, Mac.
