Review: 'MEW/ PURE REASON REVOLUTION'
'London The Mall, ICA Theatre, 25th July 2005'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
My new favourite gig venue the ICA hosted theDanish band MEW. Even though they are not a new band - they have been around for since 1997 - it was only recently that I came across them from the recent release ´Evil Office¨ which I genuinely fell in love with. The band have been massive on their home turf since their emergence, and from 2003 they have officially become the biggest Danish band in the world, well maybe after the band Aqua, remember them? But then maybe its best you didn't.

Pure Reason Revolution (PRR) were the support act for the evening. A band that closely resemble the sounds of Pink Floyd, with perfectly mastered anthemic and atmospheric 15 minute songs. A perfect introduction to Mew, setting the tone for the dark, medieval feel of this musical evening. I really enjoyed the PRR performance, I think they are definitely destined for large arenas with a massive following. Seriously recommend to you check them out!!

Mew then followed. They comprise four members: frontman floppy haired Jonas, the two striking long-haired rock Gods Bo and Johan on bass and guitar respectively and drummer Silas. They are a winning mixture of Scandinavian rock, with deep macabre soulful pop sentsitivities.

Jonas has a distinct high pitched voice, their music combines pulsating guitar riffs, long musical interludes, dark ambient epic rock songs with moody sinister visuals. The lighting of the evening was very very low, with spotlights on each band member, setting the tone, engaging the audience with their performance.

Songs ranged from thrash hardcore to sad long lost love songs always coupled with the frighteningly macbre visuals of the dark skies and wolves running through forests complementing Jonas's absolutely beautiful ethereal voice. These Danish warriors carry you away with them on a long dark musical journey into deep unknown waters, where they will protect from monsters all the way.
