'TWO BIT TRICKS'

Our Rating:
Trio THE AESTHETICS comprise of rock ‘n’ roll brothers Joe, Paul and Rich Giannone on bass/vocals, drums and guitar/vocals respectively. They’ve been doing their thing in the San Francisco Bay area for over 20 years and have already released two albums worth of material in the late 90s.

The extended time away has obviously done little to expose the band to more modern music tastes as THE AESTHETICS play old school rock ‘n’ roll of the Dave Edmunds twanging guitar variety but with the odd 'punk' flourish thrown in. Most of the music breezes by in ship shape fashion, rarely breaking into a real sweat or clamouring belligerently for my undivided attention. The variation in tone comes with the cocktail hour jaunt of the Wurlitzer electric piano instrumental ‘Three Martini Lunch’ and the keyboard led, erm, ‘Keyboard Song’: the vocals are bizarrely like a cross between Bob Geldof and Bryan Ferry.

It’s very difficult to get even remotely excited about this album. The majority of songs play like they were written from endless jamming sessions and sound like the guitarist would rather play solos all day than have to worry about things like lyrics and choruses. Many tracks would probably benefit from use in the background to a Monster Trucks DVD or a very bad Cable TV version of ‘Top Gear’. I also strongly suspect that men with mullets who prop up bars will like this music.

Nice artwork though.
