Review: 'VOLTAGE UNION'
'Voltage Union'

-  Album: '4 track demo'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'July 2005'

Our Rating:
Hitting the ground running, VOLTAGE UNION are a band with one or two ancestors from the earlier days of the current Leeds Music Scene. The very bankable VISA to name but one.

The characteristic accent (vocal and musical) of West Yorkshire's prodigious renaissance are clear. Within the overall sound VOLTAGE UNION are punchier and a bit less angular. "Take Somebody" has a respectable echo of THE JAM's David Watts about it. A pivotal bass rings with strength and style.

"City of Culture" has Kaiser Chief allusions. With a bounce and swagger to it's leery view of city life, this would be the A side if we still did A sides. They sing of moving from culture to vultures as the money and the developers move in. Vijay's crisp drumming gives it popular appeal with lots of splashy cymbals and Dave's confident voice wanders off like a police siren at one or two moments. I think I also hear hip hop's stuttering influence in the taut, edgy and crisp vocal. Riot anyone?

Supporting tracks "She Goes Out" and "Read My Lips" are more of the same concentrated pugnaciousness. Or should that be pubnacious? It’s good refreshing stuff whatever you call it.
