If your reviewer were to judge Glasgow's THE CINEMATICS on the first few seconds of "Chase", then they'd be in trouble, for it features the sort of falsetto flight of fancy from vocalist Scott Rinning that immediately makes you think 'Oh God, Chris Martin # 1259 - here we go again.'
Thankfully, this is soon erased by the entrance of the band, who ensure "Chase" soon opens out into punchy, gutsy pop with chugging guitars, edgy dynamics and an ability to get to the point. Yes, Rinning once again employs his falsetto tendencies come the chorus, but in the context it works out alright and fails to detract in the long run.
Ultimately, "Chase" is a solid, above-average debut with an ability to make big rock, hangar-filling noises without succumbing to the worst cliches. The Cinematics' music, it seems, has the widescreen capability their name suggests and we should hang around for their main feature to really get started.
