Our Rating:
Singer/songwriter Veronika (http://www.veronikazhmeniak.com) is not from this world.

She is from alternate reality, the world of dreamy voices. This is the place that Sarah McLachlan and Enya are from, but Veronika sounds like neither. Her otherworldly vocals have a sense of sorrow to them, like a chorus of tears.

The ethereal, sad textures in her voice are revealed immediately with the first track, "Through." It's hard to pay attention to the instrumentation when the vocal is that strong. Her voice punctures the air and soars through the space between reality and our imagination. The second cut, "Prayer," is even more atmospheric. You really have to be in the mood for slow music such as this, but it is spellbinding and utterly rewarding.

On the acoustic-spiced "I Fell," Veronika takes a decidedly folksy approach that nevertheless feels transcendent. Her vocals truly soar; they are a delight to behold.

This is a surprisingly varied album. Expecting to hear a consistency of sound through the record, Veronika busts down the walls of predictability. On "One More Time," she takes a jazzy approach, and you can almost see the waves of smoke in a nightclub. What's even more startling is "Can't Make Up My Mind" with its grungy guitars.

This is why it is important to support independent artists; major labels don't release LPs as creatively liberated as this.
