Review: 'NOVACANE'
'LOVE BE MY LOVER'

-  Label: 'DIRECTION'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '20/5/02'-  Catalogue No: 'XPCD 2632'

Our Rating:
Not really a great exponent of the hands-in-the-air, getting-on-one in IBIZA lifestyle, personally it ain’t too easy to relate closely to NOVACANE’S “Love Be My Lover.”

Undoubtedly, it pushes all the right buttons in a pumpin’ house stylee and will probably do the business from CREAMFIELDS to IBIZA and back again, but let’s just say as a veteran of the Madchester wars it doesn’t really convince me in thinking it’s time to get all E’d up again.

There again, NOVACANE do have one (not so) secret weapon in American ex-pat vocalist PENNY STEVENS KELLER, whose upfront, angelic tonsils do a great deal to elevate “Love Be My Lover” above the identikit dance mulch constantly dive-bombing the airwaves these days.

The extended mix of the single gives KELLER’S voice more space and she can certainly soar, but I’d personally like to hear her try something far more challenging than this.

However, in a world where the likes of SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR can successfully put down payment in this Euro dancefloor-filling territory, then who’s to deny NOVACANE their chance? “Love Be My Lover” is more than adequate in its’ field, it’s just that I’d probably skirt around the outside of it.
