Our Rating:
Just to quote from some sources about FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND here, "Funeral For A Friend [FFAF] are at the vanguard of the current rock music revival", and they also "...incorporate the full scale force of hardcore punk and metal."

Pardon me, am I reviewing the right band here? Where is the hardcore punk? Where is the metal? All I seem to be hearing is a Frat-Rock whiney ballad sung by some (evidently) lovesick skateboarders.

History is a nice tune, its very pretty. With the backing orchestra, and the synthetic Mills'n' Boon violins, it could feature as incidental music on Dawson's Creek or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, if I was in a hardcore punk/metal band at the forefront of some rock revival, I wouldn't be too happy with my music being described as 'pretty'. FFAF have supported the likes of Linkin Park and Iron Maiden, what happened?... ah I see now! Linkin Park are about as hard as wet tissue. Its all relative isn't it.

I want genuine angst, I want fast cars, loud engines, grease and hair and loud gut-wrenching guitars. I don't want some wistful Nancy-boy crooning over how the object of his affections "wanted me more than I wanted you...". That's about as hardcore as a Judy Blume novel.

I appreciate that they may have started out a lot more heavy than what this radio-friendly ballad suggests, but I still recommend that they lock themselves in their bedrooms with a couple of Throbbing Gristle albums and maybe a Grindcrusher DVD - it just might give them more of an idea of what "hardcore" actually is.
