THE ALPS' 'official' debut single, 'The World At War' is exactly what you would expect to hear from a band who's press release claims that the group sound like a mix between Franz Ferdinand and Elvis Costello.
For once though the media merchants are right. They do. They also sound exactly like the majority of other big band names of the moment, so bets are on that The Alps could actually become a rather successful group. But if they do, I for one will be upset.
Why do bands have to follow the in-crowd to become rich and famous, why can't they gain love and adoration for doing something different and out of the ordinary instead? "World At War" is a disappointingly normal and middle of the road single which fails to differentiate itself in any way, shape or form from the majority of post indie rock currently in the charts. And that's that.
