Review: 'PRIMITIVE PAINTER/ PULBY'
'SPLIT 7" SINGLE'

-  Label: 'DEAD DIGITAL'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: 'AUGUST 2002'-  Catalogue No: 'DD01'

Our Rating:
This is the first time your reviewer has come across Manchester's enigmatic Dead Digital label, but he hopes it won't be the last as this instrumental pairing is more than worthy of your headspace.

PRIMITIVE PAINTER cop their name from FELT, but in "Self Reference Hour" present something that fades in via waves of menace and incessant bloops, before settling into a sparse, distant groove not entirely dissimilar to an updated version of the murky, early Cabaret Voltaire gear for Rough Trade. That's a compliment, by the by.

PULBY's "Water From A Different Falls," on the other hand, is an altogether more considered affair, although it's none the worse for that. Built around a drum track similar to Topper Headon's "Train In Vain" (as sampled by GARBAGE for "Stupid Girl"), it's an unhurried treat, purloining some likeable, skinny funk guitar and fleeting, sparse vocal samples as it wends its way to somewhere very enjoyable indeed.

A fine opening salvo, then. Let's hope there's plenty more from whence this comes.
