Review: 'POWER CHORDS, THE'
'DEMO EP'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: 'December 2005'

Our Rating:
What a nice surprise. Even though THE POWER CHORDS are American, they sound remarkably like they've just stepped from the late 1970's British punk scene. Well, that is until they break into the odd bout of classically trained guitar riffs and some Gilbert and Sullivan vocal arrangements, but this only adds to the charm.

The further into their album you go, the further back in time their influences seem to go. First off, they're being all 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks', and then all of a sudden they sound just like the Who in their early days (check out track 3, 'Dim' and you'll get my point). Just as you get accustomed to that, they flip right back to their more punky roots.

And just in case anyone is interested, my favourite track is 'Love You, Love You', a banging song that includes the word 'Cynical' about 70 times, bless 'em.

It's great! They don't sound like the Strokes, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, or any other Art Rock bands - although if they were to hit the UK they would almost certainly end up following in the footsteps of bands such as the Futureheads or the Cribs, but they could do a lot worse.

These young chaps are impressive, their Demo is energetic and very stripped down. I really mean DIY, but I'm loath to say it, as this is the current buzzword that your average Shoreditch Haircut is coming out with at the moment. I might start saying, 'It's a bit B&Q' instead. Anyway, back to the review...

This earthy, garage quality that The Power Chords have may have more to do with the fact that their development is still embryonic, there isn't a huge pile of cash from record labels (yet) - but this gives their sound true authenticity.

So to sum up, The Power Chords are effin wicked and this W&H writer will definitely be watching this space...
