Review: 'YEAH YEAH YEAHS'
'GOLD LION'

-  Label: 'FICTION (www.yeahyeahyeahs.com)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '20th March 2006'-  Catalogue No: 'YEAH5'

Our Rating:
Recorded in LA with producer Squeak. E. Clean and mixed by Alan ‘sonic cathedral caretaker’ Moulder, the first single from soon-come second album “Show Your Bones” finds NYC’S YEAH YEAH YEAHS returning with confidence, intent and sass all gloriously intact but with a distinctly more direct and (shudder) commercial spring in their stride.

But then when it sounds this irresistibly anthemic, then why not flaunt it? Because – based around Brian Chase’s lunkheaded, “We Will Rock You”-style caveman beat, Nick Zinner’s Keef-ish acoustic riffing and Karen O simply oozing charisma as usual – “Gold Lion” is a swaggering, in-heat beast of a tune which is surely set to become a looming presence in rock’s densely-populated jungle.

One swallow doesn’t make a summer of course, but if the YYYs have a cache of these in reserve, then they’ll soon be making mincemeat of those ‘difficult’ second album clichés. That result sounds odds-on at this juncture at least.
