Review: 'ABSENTEE'
'WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE CHILDREN (vinyl and download)'

-  Label: 'Memphis Industries'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '22nd May 2006'

Our Rating:
It sounds American. It comes from London. It’s languorous old-style garage rock with a children's' chorus and Dan Michaelson's impossibly deep voice doing the slurred talk/sing thing. It’s all about life's beauty cast-offs. The kids sound quite unreasonably cheerful about the whole thing. I've heard these kids doing exactly this somewhere else. But I don’t care because it works so well right here.

There's an ABSENTEE album I haven't heard coming out too - on May 8th. So this pre-release single whets my appetite in exactly the way that Memphis Industries might have anticipated.

My recommendation is to get yourself into a Lou-Reed-as-Young-Man frame of mind and shuffle nonchalantly across to one of May's live gigs to hear the band and buy the CD. That vinyl would be nice too. It's infectious stuff.
