Our Rating:
WE ARE ALIVE!

Taken from the album ‘Black Gold’ (apparently the first biodegradable release ever), Kwangchow is a lovely record that goes “Overandoverandoveragain” ‘round its summer sunshine four chord progression in full slacker mode, with a lovely rhyming set of verses to match the repetitive subject matter. The KING BISCUIT stylo is fixed hypnotically on this funk-splitting half-sound, judging by the winding, spiralling looped ‘Tears dry’, the other featured track. Put the two together, and you have one big 12” jam, as living and breathing as it is ‘60’s psychedelic.

Hinting at progressive rock’s finest moments, but with a half blues in full effect as testament to the resigned surrender to love and loss (the repetitive cycle of), it has a loose bouncing feel that gives what is a pure summer indie track dancefloor credence as part of a mixed up DJ set. To add weight to this theory, there are two further mixes of this slowly nodding single courtesy of DOCTORS OF LOVE, who have fleshed out the original bass-heavy beat with ethnic sounding shakers and echoes where they drop the jam down to an organic ‘piano teacher has blown it’ vibe and SUICIDE DOGS, whose deep seated tampering has brought a looped (re-recorded or out take) vocal to the forefront of the mix, whilst slowing things down half a gear.

You could play this in a club and do strange things with your set or the record, despite only the loop being apparent as a house-compatible element. It has a warm, easy to dance to sound, with a lovely, loud ornament-breaking bassline.
