Review: 'LUDES, THE'
'THE DARK ART OF HAPPINESS'

-  Label: 'DOUBLA DRAGON'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'March 27th 2006'

Our Rating:
LUDES’ new album, “The Dark Art of Happiness”. Hmmm. Well, if this is a staple album on ‘Planet Ludes’ its no wonder that the concept of happiness probably scares the bejezzuz out of people - the Ludes ain’t the chirpiest of artists.

Don’t get me wrong, the musicianship is spot on, the songs are catchy (if you’re about 15 and wear black nail varnish), but there is nothing remotely original or ground-breaking in the music – they seem to be a cross between the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (ah me, what a wonderful band they were…) and the Libertines.

Granted, this isn’t a bad combination, and to be fair the album flows well – that is, like many bands around at the moment, all the songs aren’t in D minor. But after a while, the album gets boring, and is likely to induce bouts of comfort eating in susceptible listeners.

NME were quoted as stating that this band are “what the world needs right now”. Are they mad? Do they seriously think the cure for all the world’s ills lie with the Ludes? Can you imagine some poverty-stricken individual living in a war-torn area asking for a copy of “The Dark Art of Happiness” to help them out? Nyet.

Note here the air of desperation by the NME et al to create some sort of ‘buzz’ around another apparent up-n-coming band, by insinuating that the world will end without their existence. Oh dear… The Ludes are alright, but personally I can live without them.
