Review: 'KEMMIS, BOB'
'London, 12-Bar Club, 13th June 2006'

-  Genre: 'Alt/Country'

Our Rating:
It was a particularly sweaty, grimy night in London – one of those evenings where city dwellers had suffered torrential downpours immediately after sweltering heat. Needless to say after a couple of days where the weather was slightly out of the ordinary, the entire public transport system buckled, and most commuters ended up stranded on the Underground packed like tinned sardines into stinking, un-air-conditioned carriages for hours on end. God I love this city…

So bearing this in mind, this particular (honorary) Londoner had endured the above scenario in trying to get from East London to the 12-Bar in Central London, and was, frankly, in no mood to be confronted with anything short of brilliant.

Well needless to day, BOB KEMMIS wasn’t exactly mind-blowing, but to storm into the 12-Bar all bad tempered, with ridiculously high expectations was perhaps a little unfair. He certainly managed to calm the senses and engage in some friendly banter with his smooth honey-toned acoustic songs.

His performance was possibly at the high end of the pub-folk spectrum, with the sort of open-mic fodder that is easy to sing along to, and a nice dose of gentle humour to keep the punters happy. The sort of music you’d expect to find in folk clubs and intimate festivals up and down the country.

Bob Kemmis is certainly a clever lyricist - (“I’m drawn to her like water is drawn to the Moon”: for those who are interested this lyric was taken from page 8 of To Kill A Mocking Bird), witty, dry, observant, and generally nicely intelligent. None too bad at all.
