Review: 'VINES, THE'
'HIGHLY EVOLVED'

-  Label: 'HEAVENLY'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'APRIL 2002'

Our Rating:
Australia’s THE VINES are one of the current clutch of hotly tipped young pups ready to come yelping from the traps, though the fact that they’re already becoming regulars in the NME suggests that they could easily become victims of another overblown STROKES-style hype.

Which would be a pity, because on the strength of what your reviewer’s heard (basically this and “Country Yard” from the forthcoming LP), THE VINES could well be a cut above average and a force (of sorts) to be reckoned with in future.

Not that there’s anything particularly groundbreaking about “Highly Evolved”. As a title, it’s a misnomer, as THE VINES are of the two guitars, bass and drums tradition so beloved of LOU REED, but with an injection of oomph and harmony to launch this particular critter into space. That said, there’s a mordant dissatisfied note in singer/songwriter Craig Nicholls’ voice that suggests something a leetle bit different.
I’d need to hear more to be convinced, but there’s a spark here. Let’s see whether “Highly Evolved” (the album) can really set off a bush fire.
