Review: 'LARRIKIN LOVE'
'Stoke, The Underground, 18th March 2006'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
At a time when the British music scene is clogged up with skinny boys in tight jeans churning out new-wave riffs, it’s heartening to see a band as wilfully unpigeonholeable (yes, that is a word) and quirky as LARRIKIN LOVE.

They laugh in the face of genres, preferring to do what the hell they like, and they’re all the better for it. ’Happy as Annie’, their last single, is a gem, and gets the decent-sized crowd moving. It’s basically hillbilly skiffle, which may not sound that appealing, but you need to hear it to understand.

They attack a wealth of different styles in a manner that
recalls The Coral’s debut album. Nothing’s out of bounds- reggae, country, ska, and it all adds up to an exciting mish-mash that works brilliantly. ‘Charity’ chugs along like ‘Pass It On’, whereas ‘Six Queens’ is almost garage rock.

It’s hard to judge what front man Micko is actually going on
about most of the time, but hey, who cares, the choruses are so infectious that you almost find yourself singing along to something you’ve never even heard before. By the end, the audience had fallen in love with them, and soon surely the whole country will be seduced. It’s impossible not to be.
