High Voltage is one of the latest in a series of labels dedicated to promoting the up and coming talent on offer in Manchester. In addition to a successful club residency at The Roadhouse, a series of 7” single releases is showcasing this latest wave of indie-pop hopefuls to critical acclaim.
One such release is the new single by THE ANSWERING MACHINE. They’ve still got their silly-assed drum machine, but their lightweight sensibilities highlight a robust and melodic pop style that is blessed with inner strength and very reminiscent of the Heavenly Records releases of the late 80’s and early 90’s. I wonder if the band is able to recall the likes of The Field Mice or Talulah Gosh?
Both ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘The Hold Up’ are likeable jukebox contenders, the latter receiving much airplay in Manchester’s clubs at the minute. A wall of guitar sound characterises both tunes, with a heartfelt air of genuine sadness threaded through their delivery, and though it’s all been done so many times before, it hasn’t been done for a good few years, and is therefore quite refreshing in the current climate.

If it’s jangling pop that you’re after, then The Answering Machine could well be driving right up your street. Check out their Myspace and give them a listen, or see them live. They are in support of THE KBC at In The City’s High Voltage night on Sunday the 28th October.
