Review: 'ACUTES, THE'
'SET ON YOU (CD, vinyl, download)'

-  Label: 'Bad Sneakers Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'April 2 2007'-  Catalogue No: 'BADSNEAK06CD'

Our Rating:
David Kitchen sings and plays a furious guitar, while Matthew Shallcross plays high-speed drums. “Set On You” is a distilled single draught of rock and roll minimalism with a blattering twelve note riff that never goes away and never gets played exactly the same way twice. It’s hypnotic, dry, and surprisingly tuneful. If you heard and liked their great debut single “When I Left Work”, this will be right down your very street. Both releases have been graced by very terse, effective videos. (Dave Aspinall)

Given the very small space left these days for a guitar/drums duo, THE ACUTES have found a huge opening for their busy busy busy lilt. I was impressed from the first time I saw them play and this second single confirms they have the tunes as well as the style. There’s nothing to stop them now.

B side “Rumba” is less frantic , and not so sprightly. But it does show off Kitchen’s Liverpool/US twanging voice to very good effect. The story lyrics are mysterious, fascinating and very sticky. I keep listening to work out where the plot, the villains and the heroes are coming from, or going. This all hints at creative ambition of fairly broad proportions.
