Review: 'SOME VELVET MORNING'
'SETTLE DOWN'

-  Label: 'RNYTHM BANK ENTERTAINMENT'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '4th June 2007'

Our Rating:
“Oh, I try to be good and I wish that I could…”

Greg Dulli would be proud of this. If the ex-Afghan Whig ever runs out of lyrical ideas he could dip into SOME VELVET MORNING'S work and pluck out any number of little couplets to feed his confessional habit as Settle Down, the second single from London based three piece adopts a guilt-ridden approach with singer Des Lambert wrestling with the notion of living a quiet life or bowing to the allure of nightlife, booze and women.

Musically, the band appears to have made a conscious decision to appeal to both the rock and indie crowds by not being too heavy or vice versa. It’s a gamble that has paid off and is sure to garner them more fans than if they had chosen one particular path.

As for the song, a thumping back-beat is augmented by a dirty guitar riff which is immediately appealing. Only on the chorus does the song flirt with collapse as the riff and melody together almost fall out of tune.

Other than that, there’s much to recommend here. Watch this space, Mr Dulli…..
