Our Rating:
Any band with a programmable drummer called Mustafa Beat must be worth a listen, right? In fact, if Mustafa combusts a la Spinal Tap it’ll be due to electric circuitry as opposed to something infinitely more bizarre. Ah, the joys of a drum machine.

The human element to THE ANSWERING MACHINE, though, are a tidy little collective. Celebrating the art of lo-fi, this, their second single, comes off as a sort of Strokes meets Shout Out Louds number. If influences are anything to go by this lot certainly make no bones about what inspires them. What works in their favour is the way this meld of – it has to be said mostly American - influences are capitalized upon whilst retaining an unapologetically English flavour.

All in all, it’s the Answering Machine’s command of the lo-fi element to their songs which, rather than temper the songs, in effect give them a soul which would sadly be lacking if a proper drummer was employed and a big studio clean up was granted.

Whether this move was initiated by accident or not is irrelevant as it works, leaving a lasting beauty in its simplicity.

Erm, haven't heard this one, but HAVE heard the one about the drummer, many, many times......it's crap!

First heard them support Good Shoes as a last minute replacement some 15 months ago...Few weeks later I heard their single played in a club, and could not believe they had a record out.

I am afraid I'm not a fan of them, not one little bit!
