Mackem quartet THE BUBBLE PROJECT describe their music as “mental space trash rock n’ roll”
and it certainly applies to the first of the 4 tracks here. The instrumental ‘Saturn 5 DEATH SQUAD Theme Tune’ wobbles in off 1/16th cymbal beats and light feedback before serving up a surfin’ interpretation of the 6T’s, a real chiming cartoon freakout.
The gradual increase in tempo turns knuckles white before the lurch and sway of ‘The Spectacle Of Magic Dan’ drops out to leave drums/vocals vying for control over splashes of distorted guitar and cleaned up keyboard. Scales are prowled and scientific explanations are offered as this oddball pop progresses

There’s another feedback whine at the beginning of the casio-crazy ‘Mr X And The Girl With No Face’
(which computer game have they ripped off/sampled, it’s doing my head in!), and the interesting title theme continues with the spaced-out drum rolling ‘Will You Marry Me ASTRO GIRL? x x x’ a bizarre ode to some lucky dream lady.
Racket, or revelation? These splash-based eccentricities are hollow and heart wrenching and sound genuinely different to the electro-pop of the moment. You could do a lot worse than give them a listen.
