Review: 'VAMPIRE WEEKEND'
'MANSARD ROOF (single)'

-  Label: 'XL Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'November 2007'

Our Rating:
Praise from David Byrne, NME and the BBC collective raise the expectations for this four piece band formed at NYC's Columbia University.

Support slots with the likes of Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors have ensured they maintain the glare of the Indie limelight before a full length debut album hits the streets (it's due out on XL at the start of 2008).

Two tracks with a total playing time of under 5 minutes is not really enough to definitively state whether they are destined to be next years big thing or not.

The Vampire Weekend sound has been dubbed Upper West Side Soweto (or ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa) due to Afrobeat influence. This is most evident on the A side which is driven by drums more than guitars although the B side (Ladies of Cambridge) has a Jessica Pavone guesting on violin and viola so is some distance from a Womad vibe.

Above all, this the kind of bright preppy pop that contrasts with the 'woe is me' adolescent angst that all too many boy bands trade in. It's both arty and artful enough to make you think that we might tentatively begin to believe the hype.
