Review: 'GK and the Renegades / 100 Club, The'
'Manchester Roadhouse, 23 January 2008'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
It’s a dark, rainy Manchester night and the Spice Girls are in town, doesn’t hold out much hope for an exciting evening does it? Luckily The Roadhouse has two of the hottest unsigned bands in the North West playing there tonight.

Apparently renegade means 'an energetic, good-humoured, fun-filled experience' and that is certainly what GK and the Renegades provided to the crowd. Playing good, old fashioned, indie-pop the Liverpool band soon had the audience bouncing along, and even indulging in a sing a long. Floorfillers 'Girls From Birkenhead’ and ‘Sangria’ are so catchy they should come with a health warning. Frontman, GK, is a ball of energy, dashing across the stage, and back again, before throwing CDs out into the expectant crowd, all whilst managing to play guitar and sing. Full of life, and with great songs to boot, GK and friends are an exciting live act.

Headliners, The 100 Club, are a powerful three piece. Having been the featured gig in that day's local paper the band have a lot to live up to and pretty much succeed. Opening number, ‘Told You So’, is an instant classic, heavy bass lines coupled with a catchy guitar riff make the song something different on the indie heavy Manchester music scene. Reminding me of early Interpol, with the thudding bass lines of Queens of the Stone Age, they play an energetic set. The drummer is a complete showman, thrashing his kit like a man possessed. At the beginning of the set they overdid the energy levels slightly, this is a band that should let their music do the talking, but by the middle they had found their stride and left me wanting more. Always a good sign. The buzz is that The 100 Club are a band to watch, I definitely agree.
