Review: 'YATES, NEIL'
'Gonna Teach Myself To Fly'

-  Label: 'Demo (www.myspace.com/neilyates)'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'February 2008'

Our Rating:
Manchester based NEIL YATES is heavily influenced by the one and only Kate Bush. He also describes his music as ABBAesque, and the lad’s not wrong!

Orchestrated and piano-heavy, complex arrangements are filled with simple home truths to give domestic trials and tribulations a supernatural run for their money. Modern sensibilities are blasted into Patrick Moore’s line of vision as synthesised FX turbo-boost the power pop melodies.

Lead track ‘I’m Gonna Teach Myself To Fly’ is progressive in structure, near-operatic and Prozac filtered. The production is clean, polished and crystal clear, with a build-up beat and cut-off crescendo. Pure pop, this is inhibition free and musically creative.

It’s the second track, ‘Goodbye’ that really captures the imagination. Simple and self-reflexive, this is final and poignant listening for the soul. The stuff of dreams, there’s real beauty here in all three offerings.
