VIOLENT DELIGHT buzzed this reviewer into submission with their previous single, "The Same Old Story": a pinnacle of immaturecore with a kind of wincingly enjoyable nu-metal meets Jilted John quality about it. Oh, and impressive production from Sex Pistol Steve Jones to boot.
"I Wish I Was A Girl" finds our St.Albans heroes again shoving hard against the let's-see-how-much-we-can-get-away-with barrier, though this time their dopey, pre-pubescent charm doesn't cut so much ice.
For starters, musically it's all a bit too US nu-metal this time around, though I can't argue that the wall-of-sound production values again impress and certainly you can't accuse VD (yes, calm down - I realise what it abbreviates to..) for being slouches in wheeling out their non shoutier choruses.
Fair enough, VD obviously don't give a flying one about being pariahs of bad taste, but the breast-obsessed lyrics and "Some people think I might be gay, but I don't swing the other way" chorus (oh, please!) even turned this hardcore Derek & Clive head off after several listens. Ironically, the "clean" version (i.e the bleeped-out, attempted radio edit) features so many censored bits, it all ends up a bit reductive and pointless, frankly.

This writer's still willing to give VIOLENT DELIGHT the benefit of the doubt until their album arrives later this year, but "I Wish I Was A Girl" - for all its' bluster - tries far too hard to impress in the raging testosterone stakes.
