Our Rating:
It’s rare in life that you get the opportunity to witness good and evil walking hand in hand, or so readily in one place. But this is exactly what the new single from Cajun Dance Party is.

If you’re familiar with them, you’ll know that they are essentially an indie band, but one with a bit more talent and spark than the rest. They don’t just stick to one idea per song, they’re

Musicially, ‘The Race’ is great – there’s more to it than your average indie – a few strings can make a difference. I really like the bassline that runs out through this. The song lurches from part to part – the verses sound like they’re a little too fast for themselves, and this makes it interesting. There’s so much going on musically that it withstands listen after listen. The composition as a whole is engaging, with new ideas being thrown in right until the end – they don’t insist on just sticking to a repetitive hook until someone can be arsed to finish the song. In all, there’s more of a craft to Cajun Dance Party’s work than your standard indie band.

I think it’s the vocals. Or more specifically the singing on the chorus – it’s too reminiscent of The Kooks to be overlooked and this drags down the song heavily. “The sun will rise” line just lets the whole affair down – it just sounds like the multitude of standard, slightly twee indie bands that get forced down your throat week in week out.

There are so many things to like about Cajun Dance Party that you have to hope the good will out.
