Review: 'UNKLE (feat. JOSH HOMME)'
'RESTLESS'

-  Label: 'SURRENDERALL'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: 'April 2008'-  Catalogue No: 'SURR008S'

Our Rating:
UNKLE featuring Josh Homme really does sound like an exciting prospect on paper. The QOTSA frontman adding his trademark vocals to the generally accomplished alternative-dance styles of James Lavelle. Of all the hook-ups on the new album, this is definitely the one that you would want to hear.

It's the sort of collaboration that you can imagine quite easily. 'Restless' is a sleazy but funky number. There's a very disco-heavy riff, the vocals are brooding and there are some nice filthy beats running throughout. Once in a while, you're reminded of The Cazals 'I Like The Way You Move,' but generally this song is better than that. There are the rock elements, the dark undertones, and the focus seems to change in prominence between the guitars and the beats all the way through. It doesn't fall into the trap of being repetitive and it grows right until the very end.

It's a worthy song that builds and builds and is highly infectious even on a first listen. It's fair to say that no-one will be surprised or blown away by the content of this collaboration, but at the same time it's more to do with you expecting the best than any form of disappointment. Certainly one of the highlights of the recent UNKLE album, and perhaps the best indication that they could still be relevant.
