"Salt The Wound" are a mad-as-you-like micro label putting out music they want to hear, and music they want others to love (and buy)
SOLUS LOCUS are Tom Bedford, bass; Lewis Cahill, guitar and vocals; Ned Jolley. drums and melodica; and Mike Jones, keyboards, laptop, melodica and floor tom. Their Myspace site is a fair indication of their rather incoherent aesthetics. But their track on this split seven inch single stands up under the strain and enthusiasts for the chaotic, the mud-splattered and the enthusiastic side of post rock and roll would be happy to have such a thing in their collection. There's not a lot of finesse here, but there is some recognition of post-rock conventions like distinct sections, wide a dynamic range and a bit of drama.
THE VELVET ORCHESTRA have two tracks on the A side, and a bit more going for them. They are: Leemun Smith, - vocals and guitar, Alex Didlock, drums; and Ben Craig, bass. Their first track "The Creator" rips along, a bit light in terms of production values, but full of racing vocals and trembling guitar. There isn't much sense of structure or direction but it has plenty of heart. "These Children Are The Future" starts with a nice guitar lick, and then spins out of control into generic but honestly entered thrashing about with bass drum pummelery, interspersed with nice little sonic holes into which a startled vocal can be inserted. No ideas are discarded and by the end of its three minutes we've had quite a little cut-and-paste adventure on the nursery slopes of something that could become mightier.
