Review: 'NNEKA'
'HEARTBEAT'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'July 2008'

Our Rating:
Try and ignore this song. Go on, I dare you.

The bassline to ‘Heartbeat’ kicks in just like, well, a heartbeat and a backbone at the same timing, running throughout the rest of the song relentlessly. Before you have the chance to get your head around the bassline, the vocals and the pianos kick in, and then suddenly the chorus has taken over and you’re still struggling to keep up. It’s an urgent song that commands your attention from start to finish. It’s r’n’b, drum ‘n’ bass and pop ‘n’ soul all merged into one pretty short song.

Nneka has an interesting voice, that is just one of the many striking things about this release. The verses are catchy and the chorus is unique, delivered in a stilted style as if someone were opening and closing a door on her frenetically as she sings.

B-side ‘Walk the Line’ is Massive Attack style trip-hop given a slightly more modern slant. It’s the comedown after the frantic first track, and again it’s pretty hard to pigeon hole.
